Supernova Polarization and the Type IIn Classification
While the members of the Type IIn category of supernovae are united by the presence of strong multicomponent Balmer emission lines in their spectra, they are quite heterogeneous with respect to other properties such as Balmer line profiles, light curves, strength of radio emission, and intrinsic brightness. We are now beginning to see variety among SNe IIn in their polarimetric characteristics ...
متن کاملSN 1994W: a Type IIn Supernova without Core Collapse?
We present a multi-epoch quantitative spectroscopic analysis of the Type IIn SN 1994W, an event interpreted by Chugai et al. as stemming from the interaction between the ejecta of a SN and a 0.4 M⊙ circumstellar shell ejected 1.5 yr before core collapse. During the brightening phase, our models suggest that the source of optical radiation is not unique, perhaps associated with an inner opticall...
متن کاملPrecursors Prior to Type Iin Supernova Explosions Are Common: Precursor Rates, Properties, and Correlations
There is a growing number of supernovae (SNe), mainly of Type IIn, which present an outburst prior to their presumably final explosion. These precursors may affect the SN display, and are likely related to some poorly charted phenomena in the final stages of stellar evolution. Here we present a sample of 16 nearby Type IIn SNe for which we have Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) observations obtai...
متن کاملMassive circumstellar envelope around type IIn supernova SN 1995
We model the interaction of the supernova SN 1995G with a dense circum-stellar (CS) gas in a thin shell approximation. A model fit of the observed bolometric light curve combined with data on the supernova expansion velocity provides an estimate of the density of the CS shell, its mass (≈ 1 M ⊙), and age (≈ 8 years). It is shown that the derived CS gas density does not depend on the assumed mas...
متن کاملSn 2005kd: Another Very Luminous, Slowly Declining Type Iin Supernova
CCD U BV RI photometry is presented for type IIn SN 2005kd. The maximum luminosity exceeded MV = −19.8, and SN remained brighter than −18 mag for about 400 days. While overall photometric evolution is quite similar to SN 1997cy, SN 2005kd shows a plateau at phases between 119 and 311 days past explosion, which is a unique feature for SN IIn.
